Through December 31

Give someone a website this year.

You know the one. The friend running a real business off a phone number and a Facebook page. The cousin whose site has not been touched since 2016. Answer ten questions about what they do and hand them a finished page of their own website.

Free to build. No credit card. About ten minutes of your time.

Who this is for

You already know who needs this

Almost everybody has one of these people. Usually three.

They have no website at all

Real business, real customers, and nothing to send when somebody asks for a link. Roughly a third of small businesses are still in this position.

Their site has not aged well

Built once, years ago, by someone who has since moved on. It still loads, and it quietly tells every visitor the business stopped paying attention.

They know it is bad and cannot face it

The site has been on the to-do list for two years. The problem was never willingness. It was that starting from a blank page after a twelve-hour day is nobody’s idea of a Saturday.

How gifting works

Give the finished thing, not a voucher

Most gifts of this kind are a promise and a login. This one is a real page they can look at the moment you hand it over.

  1. 1. Answer ten questions about their business

What they do, who they serve, where they work. You almost certainly know enough already, and if you are unsure of a detail, they can correct it later in seconds.

  2. 2. Show them the page

A live page for their business, built from your answers, free and with no card. Send the link, or put it on a screen in front of them and watch their face.

  3. 3. Cover it, and hand it over

If they want it, you pay for the plan and they take it from there. They answer the remaining questions, edit anything that is not quite right, and publish.

Why it lands

A gift that earns them money

Most gifts get used for a season. This one sits there working: answering the question customers ask before they call, and making a one-person operation look like the real business it already is.

  • It says you took their work seriously, which is the actual gift
  • You do the part they have been avoiding, which is starting
  • They keep control, and can change every word themselves
  • No clutter, no size to guess, nothing to return
  • Costs less than the gifts people forget by February

What is in the box

What they actually receive

A multi-page website

Not a single landing page. Pages for what they do, written separately, so each service has somewhere to rank.

Words already written

The part that stops everyone. Service descriptions and an about page, written from your answers and theirs.

Built to be found

Search structure, headings and local business data included, so the site can actually turn up when somebody looks.

Hosting handled

Secure hosting, SSL and maintenance included. Nothing for them to update, patch or renew separately.

Edits by text message

No software to learn. They send a text to change a price, add a photo or update their hours.

A custom domain, free for a year

Their own address rather than a shared one, included on either paid plan for the first year.

A note on timing

There is no shipping to worry about

Nothing arrives in a box and nothing gets lost in the post. You can build the page ten minutes before you see them and it will be ready.

That said, giving it a day or two is better. It gives you time to check the details with someone who knows their business, so the version they see already feels like theirs.

What it costs to gift

Building it is free. Giving it is not much.

Build the page and show them for nothing. If they want to keep it, this is what covering it costs. Most people gift the first year and hand the account over after that.

Your subscription can be cancelled at any time. The one-time setup fee covers the hard costs of building and launching your site, so it is non-refundable once the website has been created. That is exactly why the first page is free, real and live before you decide anything.

Questions about gifting

Can I really build a website for somebody else?

Yes. You answer ten questions about their business and a real page of the site is generated straight away. It is free and needs no card, so you can do the whole first stage without asking them anything.

What if I get a detail wrong?

It does not matter much. Every word, price and image can be changed afterwards in seconds, and they will want to make it theirs anyway. Getting the shape of it right is the gift. The fine detail is a five minute job for them.

Do I need their permission first?

Not to build the free page. You will need them involved to publish it on their own domain and to answer the remaining questions, so most people show the page first and let that be the surprise.

Who pays after the first year?

Whoever you agree. Many people cover the first year as the gift and hand the account over afterwards. The subscription can be cancelled at any time, and the setup fee is one-time.

Is it obviously a template?

No. The site is generated from the answers you give about that specific business, so two businesses in the same trade do not come out the same. They can also add their own photographs.

How long do I have?

This runs through December 31. The build itself takes about ten minutes, so there is no practical deadline beyond that date.

Ten minutes now. A better year for them.

Think of the person whose business deserves better than a phone number and a Facebook page. Build theirs free and see what they say.
